How to Run 531 Without Spreadsheets (or Giving Away Your Data)
531 works best when it’s simple.
The program itself is already straightforward. The tracking usually isn’t.
Most people end up in one of two places:
- A spreadsheet that slowly becomes a mess
- An app that wants an account, stores everything in the cloud, and slowly collects more data than it needs
There’s a cleaner middle ground.
What you actually need to track
For standard 531 you only need a few things:
- Your Training Maxes
- The calculated working sets for the day
- A place to log the top set (and any extra reps)
- A simple record of what you did
That’s it.
You don’t need social features, complicated graphs, or another login.
The spreadsheet problem
Spreadsheets work… until they don’t.
They break on your phone.
Formulas get overwritten.
You end up scrolling around between sheets in the middle of a workout.
And if you want the same log on another device, you’re suddenly dealing with cloud sync and permissions.
They’re fine for planning. They’re rarely pleasant for logging.
The app problem
Most workout apps solve the convenience issue but create a different one: your data lives on their servers.
For a lot of people that’s acceptable. For others it isn’t.
Training logs are personal. Some lifters prefer to keep them local, on their own device or in their own private storage, without creating yet another account.
A simpler approach
Here’s a clean way to run 531:
- Set your Training Maxes (usually 90% of your true 1RM)
- Let the percentages be calculated for you
- Log the work in a fast, focused interface
- Keep the data under your control
No accounts required. No forced cloud. Just the training.
Introducing Fit For 531
